Peter Busby offers tips on green building in his February 2010 Forbes byline titled
"Seven Keys to Green Building." The focus of the article explores incorporating sustainable
design for both the bottom line and employee morale through seven steps:
"No matter how large or small a business is, business leaders must consider the work
environment. Applying certain principles of sustainability can lead to dramatic savings
that also improve a company's performance from an environmental and social perspective."

Busby Perkins+Will Celebrate 25 Years of Innovation
On November 26, 2009 Busby Perkins+Will celebrated their 25th Anniversary amongst 300 of their closest clients, staff, friends and collaborators at the firm's converted warehouse office in Yaletown.
Peter Busby started his first architectural practice in Vancouver in 1984 with a desire to influence the city's growth and have a direct social and physical effect on the built environment. At a time when the North American green design movement was still in its infancy, Peter and his firm realized that as architects and planners they had the both the power and the obligation to become instruments of change. 25 years later, the firm has over 80 staff in Vancouver, 22 offices in five countries, more than 100 design awards and is recognized internationally for their architectural excellence and green leadership.
A timeline of key milestones, projects and events was displayed, in addition to an exhibition titled 20+5: Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation featuring the firm's most cutting-edge current projects that demonstrate sustainability innovations and design leadership. Exhibited projects represented the firm's next generation of projects and addressed a variety of current environmental challenges while exploring the positive integration of human activity into ecological systems and demonstrating how conscientious design can achieve important benchmarks, such as net zero energy and net zero carbon.
Principal David Dove opened the evening's speakers by thanking guests, "our success is a product of our collaboration."
Author and Professor of Architecture at Waterloo University, John McMinn followed, "[Peter and his firm] have set a benchmark for landmark projects, shaping the next generation of architects in Canada—They have set a direction and a standard for architecture."
Blair McCarry, a new addition to the firm but a longtime friend and collaborator of Peter's, shared some of their journey over the last 20 years, saying that working with Peter and his staff is "both challenging and inspiring."
Managing Director and Founder, Peter Busby proudly thanked his collaborators, clients, Principals and staff, both past and present for their steady support. In his closing words, he looked to the future, "First of all we stand for Design Excellence and second, Sustainability. We have to create architecture in synch with the natural world, reconciling man with nature. We will continue to learn, create and make tough decisions."

Clinton Climate Initiative recognizes Busby Perkins+Will's Dockside Green as a Showcase Project
The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) announced a global program, the Climate Positive Development Program, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The program will support the development of large-scale urban projects that demonstrate cities can grow in ways that are 'climate positive.' Climate Positive real estate developments will strive to reduce the amount of on-site CO2 emissions to below zero.
Busby Perkins+Will's Dockside Green in Victoria, BC was named as one of the sixteen founding projects that demonstrate Climate Positive strategies, setting a compelling environmental and economic example for cities to follow.

Busby Perkins+Will announced today that the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) has selected two of the firm's projects as 2009 AIBC Award Winners. The firm's
Arts & Social Sciences 1 and Blusson Hall at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, was honoured with a Lieutenant-Governor Award in Architecture medal and Dockside Green Synergy, Victoria, BC, won the AIBC Special Jury Award. The AIBC Architectural Awards are Western Canada’s most esteemed recognition of architectural excellence and they celebrate recent achievements of AIBC member architects and firms.
Arts & Social Sciences 1 and Blusson Hall at Simon Fraser University is a new, multi-faculty development on the Burnaby campus. Arts & Social Sciences 1 creates a consolidated home for five existing faculties – the Schools of Archaeology, Criminology, Clinical Psychology, First Nations Studies, and the Centre for Forensics Research – and Blusson Hall houses the new Faculty of Health Sciences, which required a setting that would quickly integrate the new faculty into the existing university program.
Dockside Green Residential Phase I, also referred to as
"Synergy," consists of four detached residential and is the highest-scoring LEED® Platinum Certified building on record. The development employs an integrated energy system that ensures the development will be greenhouse gas neutral, while also providing the opportunity for the project to become a net-energy provider. In addition to designing Synergy, Busby Perkins+Will was responsible for the master plan for the entire 15-acre mixed-use Dockside Green development on Victoria's inner harbor, which is expected to become the first LEED Platinum community in the world.

Dockside Green Phase 1 is the Highest-Scoring LEED Platinum Certified Project on Record
Dockside Green Phase I, also referred to as "Synergy," includes four detached buildings constructed over a common underground parking structure, including a nine-storey residential tower with minor commercial units on the groundfloors; a two-storey townhouse; a six-storey building with minor commercial units on the ground floor; and, a four-storey residential building which reached Platinum at 63 points, making it the highest-scoring LEED Platinum Certified project in the world. Formerly, the highest-ranked Platinum project was the Minnesota-based Aldo Leopold Legacy Center at 61 points.
Dockside Green is employing an integrated energy system that ensures the development will be greenhouse gas neutral, while also providing the opportunity for the project to become a net-energy provider. The system includes a biomass gasification plant that converts locally-sourced wood waste into a clean burning gas to produce heat and hot water. Among the development’s many other sustainable features: an on-site wastewater treatment that is expected to save more than 70,000 gallons of water annually; rooftop gardens; a car co-op with Smart Car; and, additional energy-saving features, including Energy Star appliances, heat recovery ventilations units, Low E double glazed windows and exterior blinds on the west and south faces of each building. A series of ponds spread throughout Dockside's central greenway also assist in on-site stormwater storage while the greenway itself provides the development with significant public open space.
In addition to designing Phase 1, Busby Perkins+Will was responsible for the design of the master plan for the entire 15-acre mixed-use Dockside Green development, which is expected to become the first LEED Platinum community in the world.

Peter Busby Conferred Honorary Doctorate from Ryerson University
Peter Busby, Managing Director of Busby Perkins+Will and co-founder and current Chair of the Canada Green Building Council, was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Science by Ryerson University during their spring Convocation ceremonies in Toronto on June 10, 2008.
In its citation, the University praised Peter as "an inventive and internationally recognized architect who has been at the forefront of environmental sustainability and green building design in Canada for many years." Following the receipt of his degree, Peter delivered the Convocation Address at the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science ceremony.

TELUS House Awarded Top Honours by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia
Busby Perkins+Will's TELUS House has been named the 2008 Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award for Excellence in Architecture medal winner. In addition to the top Medal prize, eight additional awards were handed out including five merit awards, two special jury awards and an innovation award, all in recognition of architectural excellence.
The AIBC Architectural Awards are Western Canada's most esteemed recognition of architectural excellence. TELUS House was selected from a record 51 submissions.
TELUS House is the culmination of a two-phase project carried out over seven years. It was originally intended to revitalize the client's existing complex, and reposition its corporate identity at the same time. The client's mandate — "reuse, recycle, go green" — was taken to heart. As a result, TELUS House has raised the bar for sustainable design practices. In addition to being visually striking, its unique and highly effective natural ventilation system represents the first double-wall, triple skinned "green" building solution in the country. The Phase Two atrium also pushed the envelope, utilizing a unique and elegant steel solution that boosted structural integrity while opening the inner space to an abundance of natural light.

Kathy Wardle Featured in an
Article in Maclean's Magazine
Associate Principal Kathy Wardle is currently featured in an article in
Maclean's on Campus entitled "How green is your university?." As Director of
Research Kathy managed her department's recent survey of Canadian universities,
which gathered information about curriculum, research, waste management, energy
consumption, water use, administrative leadership, and other initiatives such as
transportation services and long-term plans. Kathy initially released the survey
findings by co-authoring an article for Academic Matters magazine, a publication
of the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations.
